Bell & Canada Piano Company 1910 - 1920
Bell London/Canada pianos were built in Ontario, Canada. Most were built between 1910 and 1920 and are good quality pianos. This one is unusual as this is straight strung and most were built overstrung. They have well-built actions that stand the test of time, and if tuned annually, remain in good order and need little regulation.
This piano hadn't been tuned in a long time and unfortunately some of the tuning pins were not holding the string at any tension. The previous piano tuner to come to see this piano had said that he couldn't tune the piano because of this problem, however, I decided to replace the loose pins for bigger guage in order to tune these strings properly. The customer was happy with my solution and was willing to go ahead with the repair solution.
This image shows the pin replacement process. It envolves taking the old pin out and releasing the string from it's pin hole. You can see the pin is fairly long and goes deep into the piano block and grips by friction. The string is under great pressure and needs to grip well to hold the correct note. Once the pins were replaced I continued to give the piano a thorough tuning.
At first it seemed that I was not going to be able to tune this piano, but after careful thought I was able to come up with a solution which made the customer really happy. I was pleased with the outcome and the reaction from the staff. They enjoyed how the piano sounded when I played it after finishing the tuning. All in all this was a successful job that was challenging but rewarding.Â
